New Music Fridays: “Rois” —Music from Aṣẹ

Happy new music Friday — In today’s installment, we look at Aṣẹ Records, a recently formed company by some of Johannesburg’s most prominent music and culture curators. Their sound is heavily influenced and inspired by African music elements and fits within the Afro-tech sound genre.

About Afro House

Afro house is a subgenre of House that originated in South Africa. Deep House and Southern African Music, most notably Kwaito, are incorporated throughout the sound. It has a peaceful, hypnotic groove with drums like shakers and congas on top of a four-on-the-floor House beat that plays at roughly 120 BPM. Although it shares parallels with Tribal House on occasion, it often has a deeper, more organic, soulful, and melodic sound, pulling from Progressive House in some circumstances. Another typical aspect is the use of vocal samples from diverse African musics or soulful, unique features.

Rois By Aṣẹ Records

Joe Human’s “Rois” has just been released under Aṣẹ Records. Rois (French for “Kings”) pays homage to an African Kings chant and voyage.

The sound and production are well-balanced, allowing each instrument to shine in its own right and provide a wonderful listening experience. The artists take pridein the sound’s creation; , with that said, we hope you enjoy it as much Aṣẹ Records Artists enjoyed producing it.
