There are tasting experiences, and then there are experiences that linger long after the last sip and final bite. Recently, Press Icons had the pleasure of attending the exclusive Johnnie Walker Blue #BlueSociety event, where media, friends of the brand, and selected guests were invited to indulge in a carefully curated evening of food, cocktails, and conversation.
Hosted at the luxurious Gemelli and its adjoining restaurant, Phirinyane, in the heart of Bryanston, Sandton, the evening reflected the essence of Johnnie Walker Blue—rarity, craftsmanship, heritage, and purpose. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this wasn’t just another dinner—it was a celebration of elevated taste.

Our experience began with a welcome drink: a beautifully balanced Johnnie Walker Blue-infused Whiskey Sour. Smooth, refreshing, and expertly crafted, it set the tone for what would become a memorable culinary journey.
The atmosphere was equally impressive. Warm lighting, intimate seating, and the soothing sounds of renowned harpist Jude Harpster transformed the venue into a sophisticated haven. Her jazzy renditions and elegant presence floated through the room, creating the perfect soundtrack for an evening centered around indulgence and connection.

A Johnnie Walker Menu
Then came the menu—and what a delicious dilemma it was. The tasting experience offered a selection of starters, mains, and desserts, allowing guests to choose between expertly curated options.

For our first course, we opted for the Tomato Feta Bruschetta, featuring flame-charred ciabatta topped with tomato, onion, creamed feta, and balsamic reduction. Fresh, vibrant, and surprisingly filling, every bite delivered a burst of flavour. The combination of creamy feta and the tangy balsamic reduction created a perfect balance, making this a standout starter.
Guests also had the option of the Citrus Whiskey Butter Seabass, a beautifully plated dish featuring grilled seabass, citrus whiskey butter, vegetable garden elements, and potato fondant. The presentation alone was enough to turn heads across the room.

As we awaited the mains, the cocktails continued to flow.
One of the highlights was the Margarita Twist, a citrus-forward cocktail infused with Johnnie Walker Blue.

Served in a classic margarita glass, the Margarita Twist delivered refreshing zest with a noticeable kick that cocktail enthusiasts would certainly appreciate.
Equally memorable was the Italian Apple Cocktail, arguably one of the most visually striking drinks of the evening. Sweet, fragrant, and layered with musky notes, it offered a softer, fruit-forward alternative while still allowing the whisky’s character to shine through.

Mains
For the main event, we selected the Whisky Glazed Short Rib—and it did not disappoint.

Slow-cooked to perfection, the short rib was tender enough to fall effortlessly off the bone. Coated in a sticky Johnnie Walker glaze, the meat carried rich smoky notes while maintaining a succulent juiciness that made every bite irresistible.
Resting on a bed of silky potato purée and accompanied by baby corn, glazed carrots, and fresh rocket, the dish struck a perfect balance between comfort and sophistication. The mash alone deserves special mention—it was creamy, flavourful, and arguably one of the best accompaniments we’ve enjoyed in recent memory.
Another main option available was the Smokey Beef Carpaccio, featuring charred orange, Johnnie Walker whiskey gel, parmesan soil, lemon aioli, pickled onions, and rocket. A creative interpretation that showcased the versatility of whisky within contemporary cuisine.

Just when we thought the evening couldn’t get any sweeter, dessert arrived.
The Whisky Barrel Chocolate Sphere was every bit as decadent as it sounds. Featuring a rich chocolate sphere paired with vanilla mascarpone, savoiardi, whisky caramel, orange gel, and edible gold accents, it was a luxurious finish that beautifully blended sweetness with subtle whisky undertones.
Its counterpart, the Modern Malva, offered a proudly South African twist. Served with Johnnie Walker custard, rooibos gel, vanilla crumble, vanilla gelato, and gold accents, it elevated the beloved traditional dessert into something refined and memorable without losing its comforting essence.
As the evening drew to a close, guests continued mingling over cocktails, exchanging stories, building new connections, and capturing the perfect photo moments. It was one of those rare events where every element felt thoughtfully considered—from the menu and entertainment to the venue selection itself.

We’ve long appreciated Gemelli for its exceptional food and atmosphere, but Johnnie Walker Blue’s decision to host the #BlueSociety experience there felt particularly fitting. The partnership perfectly reflected the exclusivity, elegance, and attention to detail that define both brands.
For us, the true star of the evening was witnessing how seamlessly Johnnie Walker Blue translated into both food and cocktails. Rather than overpowering dishes, the whisky enhanced flavours, added complexity, and elevated the overall dining experience.
The #BlueSociety isn’t simply about enjoying a premium whisky; it’s about celebrating craftsmanship, connection, and unforgettable moments. Judging by this experience, Johnnie Walker Blue delivered exactly that—and more.
